Racing season is in full force now that it’s June. I took on my 4th Tough Mudder this weekend at Mount Snow with a team of badasses and we had a blast! I’ve spent my winter working to improve my strength and conditioning so I can be more competitive in my racing this summer, but there’s something about the teamwork aspect and untimed nature of Tough Mudder that draws me in every time. There are no rankings at the end, but you leave with a sense of camaraderie and a full heart after spending hours on a mountain caring for the well-being of friends and strangers around you. I wish my morning commute could feel like that!
New and Improved Obstacles
I think the hardest thing we did all day was the new Everest. It was steeper, higher, and slipperier than in years past. Our first team member made it up by running and grabbing someone’s hand, but the rest of us were not able to run far enough to grab anyone. I tried a couple of times and I ran as hard as I could, but started losing traction at the halfway point. There was a moment when I wasn’t sure how we were going to get up that wall.
This ended up being the biggest problem-solving challenge all day, but we did it. We tried making a chain from the bottom up and climbing each other, but we ran out of bodies and couldn’t reach. What finally worked, was hanging a team member off the side so we could run up and jump to grab her ankles and climb her body until we could reach an outstretched hand. I think we spent 20 minutes there and exhausted a lot of energy, but it was a great feeling to get it done!
My favorite obstacle of the day was Dead Ringer. It’s like monkey bars American Ninja Warrior style. Once you found a good swing, you could get into a rhythm. The descent was a little more difficult. My left ring got stuck a couple of times, but I reset, got my swing going again and finished. I would love to play on this more!
The new Funky Monkey was harder than it looked. The uphill monkey bars were same as last year. It was that damn trapeze bar that swings afterwards where people get stuck. I swung a couple of times on it to get my momentum before reaching to transfer to the single bar for the descent. I grabbed the bar, but not well enough, and my body began to swing back. I had to make the choice to reach my other hand for the new bar, or grab the trapeze again and try again. I went for the trapeze and slipped off.
There was a promise of higher voltage this year in Electroshock Therapy, but it didn’t feel any different. Last year, I ran 2 Tough Mudders and didn’t get shocked once. This year, I took 3-4 hits, but I shook them off and kept going. The crowd was pretty awesome here. The energy was good!
A made a little video of some of the highlights of our day. I’m sad it’s over and I can’t wait to do another Tough Mudder!
